UNC, ACC Off To Fast Start With 2013 Class

The latest All Star Girls Report national Top 25 for the Class of 2013 has been released, and the clear winners are North Carolina and the Atlantic Coast Conference. Top-ranked Mercedes Russell is still uncommitted, but the Tar Heels have pledges from No. 2 Diamond DeShields and No. 4 Stephanie Mavunga, as well as two other Top 20 talents.

Now in its 17th year, the All Star Girls Report is the leader in women’s basketball scouting. ASGR’s rankings are compiled by veteran analyst Bret McCormick, who rated over 1,500 athletes in the class. ASGR members can log in and view the complete updated rankings at www.ASGR.info.

“North Carolina obviously has the top class right now, and the ACC overall is doing very well,” noted ASGR analyst Bret McCormick. “When you look at the class as a whole, I think it’s a little top heavy. The Top 50 or 60 players are all the type of players who could have a quick impact.

“The one weakness in the class is in the post. There are just not a lot of quality post players in the class, which has been a trend over the past few years.”

Here is a quick look at the ASGR Super Six for 2013 along with a quick comment from McCormick:

1- Mercedes Russell (Uncommitted): “Mercedes is definitely the best post player in the country. She was a smaller player when she was young, and she still has the skills of a perimeter player. But, she has grown into a true post player who has the ability to score with either hand. Right now, it looks like she will end up at Louisville or Tennessee.”

2- Diamond DeShields (UNC): “Diamond is probably the most talented player in the class. She is a dynamic player who can do it all. When she is being assertive, she can average a triple double.”

3- Kaela Davis (Uncommitted): “Kaela is Antonio Davis’ daughter, and she is a talented, versatile athlete who could play the two, three or four spots. She is a talented athlete, but I think she also needs to me more assertive, just like Diamond. Kaela committed to Tennessee very early, but then she de-committed. I think right now Georgia and Tennessee are the two most likely choices for Kaela.”

4- Stephanie Mavunga (UNC): “Stephanie is going to have an early impact in Chapel Hill. She has a good body, and she is a true inside-outside threat. She knows how to score, and she has range out to the three-point arc.”

5- Taya Reimer (Notre Dame): “Taya is a big, strong, lefty athlete who will give Notre Dame immediate help in the post. Taya also has the shooting range and athleticism to compete away from the rim.”

6- Linnae Harper (Uncommitted): “This is a dynamic player who will be a nightmare for opponents. She is a complete player. She is the type of player who could get 20 rebounds in a game, she can score, and she is a lock-down defender. I think Kentucky is the leader, but UCLA, Tennessee and Connecticut are still in it.”
