Thomas Joyce Joins ASGR Staff

Veteran collegiate coach Thomas Joyce has been added to the All Star Girls Report staff. Joyce, who most recently served as the associate head coach for the Virginia Tech women’s program, will scout the Northeast region and conduct ASGR events in the Boston area.

“Tom has been on the men’s side and the women’s side as a coach, so he is very well reverse in the game. He is a tireless worker and a great eye for talent,” said ASGR Women’s Managing Partner and lead analyst Bret McCormick. “We are very excited to have him joining the company.”

After 13 years as a college coach, Joyce is looking forward to the new challenge.

“This will be a little bit of a different gig for me, but it’s basically what I’ve been doing for the past 13 years,” Joyce said. “Basketball is my passion, and I think all coaches are in the business to help kids. I am looking forward to working with Mike and Bret, and I’m looking forward to helping student-athletes in the Northeast and the college coaches.”

After graduating from Boston College in 2000, Joyce began his coaching career on the men’s side with a two-year stint on the staff at Worcester Polytechnic in Massachusetts, and then four years at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire. Joyce then made stops at Boston University and Bucknell.

Joyce moved to women’s basketball when he joined his former boss at BU, Dennis Wolff, at Virginia Tech in 2011.

“The main thing I enjoyed at Tech was that the girls were very, very receptive to coaching,” said Joyce who has three daughters under the age of three. “They really made an effort to do what we were telling them. Sometimes with guys, they want to do their own thing. The girls at Tech were very receptive to our coaching.”

The transition to the women’s game was challenging, but fortunately Joyce received an assist from ASGR staff.

“One of the first calls I made at Virginia Tech was to David Tapley with Kentucky Premier, and he told me that I should call Bret because he was the best in the business. I called Bret, and then I think I was his first phone call pretty much every morning that summer,” Joyce said with a laugh. “Both Bret and Mike were a tremendous help in getting to understand the landscape of women’s basketball. They both went way out of their way to help me.”
