Texas Preps Eye FILA Sixty-Four In Las Vegas

Karen Aston and the Texas staff are among the coaches following the Texas Prep Elite program this summer.

The Texas Preps Elite program has already earned national prominence, and Coach Kevin Brown hopes his unit can add a little more polish to that shining star when they compete at the FILA Sixty-Four event in Las Vegas in July.

The FILA Sixty-Four, which will include over 48 national teams, will be played at the Westin Lakes in Las Vegas from July 27-30. This is one part of a series of previews for the FILA Sixty-Four where we will highlight the outstanding programs who will be competing.

Brown is confident that his team will be ready when they arrive in Vegas.

“The girls have been preparing very, very well,” he said. “We had some good tests in June, and all of our teams have been playing very well.”

The Texas Prep roster is highlighted by a trio of talented prospects from the Class of 2015. Kathy Okwilagwe is a 6-1 forward who is listed as the No. 231 recruit in the class by the All Star Girls Report; Chastity Barrs is a 5-7 point guard; and  Taylor Holley is a 6-0 three player.

“Kathy is a player with a special motor. She works extremely hard on both ends of the court,” Brown said. “She is very, very athletic, she has a good mid-range game, and she can rebound and bang inside. Chastity is one of the most talented players I have coached in 14 years. She is a floor general who can attack the basket, and she plays with a lot of energy on the defensive end. Taylor is a tough matchup for other teams because she likes contact, but she can also hit the three. Taylor is another player who is always working to improve.”

Brown also noted two other Texas Prep players who will be looking to make a mark in Las Vegas. Janaya Hines and Tiffany Dunlap are both 5-11 backcourt players.
