Ring City Heading West To FILA Sixty-Four

C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers is one of the coaches following Ring City this summer.

Ring City will be taking its brand of New York City basketball west to Las Vegas in July for the FILA Sixty-Four event. After launching the year with a successful spring, Ring City is optimistic about the summer months.

“I’m happy with where we are right now,” said program director Walter Welsh. “The kids have been working very hard, and we had some big wins this spring. I’m expecting a very good summer.”

The FILA Sixty-Four, which will include over 48 national teams, will be played at the Westin Lakes in Las Vegas from July 27-30. This is one part of a series of previews for the FILA Sixty-Four where we will highlight the outstanding programs who will be competing.

The Ring City roster is highlighted by five players who have Division I potential. In the Class of 2014, Aliyah Huland El is a 6-1 wing who is rated at No. 34 nationally by the All Star Girls Report, Isis Young is a 5-7 guard who is rated at No. 196, and Alexis Spears is a 6-2 post who is at No. 306. Huland El has verbally committed to Virginia, and Spears is committed to Delaware.

“Aliyah is a great athlete with a very strong body. She could play the two or the three, and she knows how to score,” said ASGR analyst Bret McCormick. “Isis is another strong athlete. She can attack the basket, she has a nice pull-up jumper, and she is a vocal leader. Alexis is a good athlete who can really jump, and she has improved a lot recently.”

Those rising seniors are complemented by two standouts from the Blair Academy who are both in the Class of 2015. Batouly Camara is a 6-2 power forward who is listed at No. 33 by ASGR. Breanna Cavanaugh is a 5-7 point guard who is listed at No. 69.

“Batouly has a great, strong body, and she is a very aggressive inside player. She has a very high motor,” said McCormick. “Breanna has a great skill set. She is very quick and very strong, and she knows how to get into the lane.”

While those older players will be carrying the banner for Ring City in Las Vegas, Welsh is also excited about the future of his program.

“We also have some very talented ladies coming up,” said Welsh, who always seems to have talent in the wings.

In particular, Welsh noted the Remil sisters. Jodi Ramil is a 6-2 rising sophomore, Olivia is a 6-2 rising freshman, and Annie is a 5-7 rising seventh grader.
