UConn Has High Hopes For 2014 Class

Recee’ Caldwell is one of the talented point guards in the 2014 recruiting class.

Connecticut has put itself in position to have a huge recruiting class in 2014. Coach Geno Auriemma and his staff already have a commitment from highly-regarded Courtney Ekmark, and the Huskies could land three of the Super Six prospects in the class.

While post players are usually the diamonds in a recruiting class, the 2014 group is highlighted by a special bunch of point guards. The All Star Girl Report’s Top 25 for 2014, which is compiled by veteran analyst Bret McCormick, includes nine players who are identified as point guards.

“Overall, this is a pretty strong class,” McCormick said. “This class is much better than the 2013 class. There are obviously a lot of point guards, and this is one of the better post classes we have had in the last five years.”

Here is a quick look at the ASGR Super Six for 2014 along with a quick comment from McCormick:

1. A’ja Wilson: “Wilson is a 6-4 lefty who really could play any of the five positions. That’s what makes her special. She can bring the ball up the court, pass it, post you up, and she can score.”

2. Kelsie Mitchell: “Mitchell is a another lefty, and she can do it all out front. She has deep three-point range, she can get to the rim on anyone, and she plays great defense. A lot of people feel like Mitchell is the best player in the class.”

3. Brianna Turner: “Turner is a good, strong athlete at 6-4. She has a nice inside-outside game. I could see her playing the four, three or five spots in college.”

4. Recee’ Caldwell: “This is a great point guard. She is a very intelligent player who loves the game — she eats the game and sleeps the game. She can impact a game in a number of ways because she can hit the deep three and she is a great defensive player.”

5. Jordin Canada: “Canada is a true point guard. She is a great passer, and she can get to the rim. She is the type of player who shoots a lot of free throws. She is great at setting up her teammates and running the show.”

6. JaTarie White: “White is another lefty, and she is very athletic. She has a great basketball body, she can score in the paint, and she can step out to 16 feet. White is a great rebounder who works hard and brings a lot of energy.”
