Minnesota Fury Seeking Amazing DSC Three-Peat

Winning a major title at a national level competition is a tremendous accomplishment. Taking the same title in back-to-back years is a very rare feat. At the 2016 Deep South Classic, the Minnesota Fury will be looking for an almost inconcievable third consecutive championship.

“We’ve won the top bracket the past two years, so we’re going down there to win it again this year,” said Coach Nick Storm. “We know it’s special to win in back-to-back years, and the kids on this team don’t want the streak to end.”

The Deep South Classic will be played for the 19th time in 2016. The Classic will run from April 21-24 in Raleigh, N.C., and it will once again be held at the magnificent Raleigh Convention Center. The entire event will be played under one roof, with action flowing on 20 courts.

The Fury has received more tha championship trophies from their previous visits to Raleigh.

“The Deep South has always been a great exposure tournament for us,” Storm said. “You have schools from across the country, and you have schools at all different levels represented. The other thing is that you have a lot of head coaches, and they are the decision makers. At most events, you’ll see one assistant coach. At the Deep South, you see that assistant and the head coach.

“We have a lot of intelligent student athletes in our program, and they are interested in some of the East Coast schools. We’ve had a number of girls go to those schools in the past, an it was largely because they were seen and evaluated at the Deep South Classic.”

The Fury will bring seven teams to Raleigh, including a number of talented 2017 prospects. The list is led by Kristen Scott (6-2, P), Lindsay Theuninck (5-7, PG), Olivia Korngable (5-10, G) and Anika Jank (6-3, F).

The All Star Girls Report currently has Scott listed as the No. 110 recruit nationally in the class, while Jank is at No. 317 and Theuninck is at No. 322. Scott is an Iowa State commitment, while Jank is headed to Colorado and Theuninck is a South Dakota State pledge,

“Kristen is at her best blocking and altering shots and rebounding, but she is improving her perimeter game. She can shoot the three now,” Storm said. “Lindsay committed very early, and she has been getting a lot of attention from bigger programs. She shoots the three very well, and she is a good all-around scorer.

“Olivia is a physical guard with good size. She is very strong, but she also has good quickness. She has a great mid-range game, and she is a great defender. Anika is new to our program. She is a long, lean left-handed slasher how is a very good athlete.”
