Massachusetts Huskies Heading To Deep South Classic

The Class of 2014 for the Massachusetts Huskies earned a pair of scholarships. This year, the Huskies believe they can double that number.

“We have a lot of good talent in the program this year,” said Coach Hank Desantis. “We had two players sign scholarships last year, and I really think we have four or five players this year who are at the scholarship level.”

Those athletes will be showcased at the 2014 Deep South Classic, which will be played in Raleigh, NC, on April 25-27. Now in its 17th year, the Deep South Classic annually hosts many of the nation’s elite travel teams in a field that will eclipse 200 squads, and hundreds of collegiate coaches will be on hand searching for talent. The 2014 event will mark the second year that the Deep South Classic has been held at the Raleigh Convention Center. The venue was a tremendous success in its debut last year, with all games played at one site on 18 courts, and it is in a convenient central location.

The Huskies will be led in Raleigh by combo guard Anna Kelly. The 2016 prospect is currently leading the Massachusetts prep ranks in scoring, and Desantis is expecting big things this spring.
“Anna is a superior athlete. She is as good as any athlete you are going to see,” the coach said. “She has three-point range, she does a great job of getting to the hole and finishing, and she gets a lot of points off her defense.”
Bret McCormick, the analyst for the All Star Girls Report, added, “Anna is a heady, hard-nosed competitor. She has good quickness, and she has three-point range.”
Kelly will be surrounded by a strong supporting cast that includes Kylie Lorenzen (2015, 5-11, G), Shannon Murphy (2017, 6-1, WF), Samantha Leone (2016, 5-9, G), Sabrina Ulsh (2015, 6-0, F) and Amy Haven (2015, 5-10, F).
“Kylie is a tremendous three-sport athlete who is committed to Northeastern,” Desantis said. “She is a versatile player who can hit the three or get to the rim. Shannon is already hearing from a lot of major Division I programs. She can go by people, she can shoot it, and she is a excellent defender. Her ceiling is very high — I think she could be a Top 100 type player. Sam is a good athlete who can get to the rim, and she can shoot it. Sabrina is a tough, raw player who knows how to move bodies and finish. Amy is a three-four player with an inside-outside game.”
McCormick also gave his perspective on the Huskies’ standouts.
“Lorenzen is an athlete who knows the game, and she has an all-around game,” he said. “Murphy is a long athlete with a good understanding of how to play the game. I think a lot of coaches will want to see her. Leone is a skilled, intelligent combo guard. Ulsh is a blue collar type player who can score inside, rebound, and run the floor. Haven is a three-four player who likes to compete. She does all the little things, plays solid defense, and scores inside and outside.”
