Latest Recruiting Updates

Both Nikki Caldwell of LSU and Joe Tartamella of St. John’s (top) have enjoyed recruiting success this summer.

The 2014 recruiting classes are coming into focus, and over the next month we will review some of the programs that are enjoying the most success in the early going. Here is a quick look at some of the teams that have been making noise this summer, along with the perspective of All Star Girls Report analyst Bret McCormick. Each athlete is listed with their ASGR national ranking for 2014.

St. John’s: Imani Littleton, No. 75, 6-3, PF; Tamesha Alexander, No. 91, 5-6, PG; Tonoia Wade, No. 133, 6-2, SG; Crystal Simmons, No. 177, 6-0, PG.

McCormick on the Red Storm: “St. John’s got a great sleeper with Imani. She is a good athlete who can do a lot of things, and she has a tremendous upside. They call Alexander ‘Sox,’ and she is an athletic, strong point guard who can really score off the dribble. Tonoia is an athletic wing with good size, and she is an excellent three-point shooter. Crystal is an international combo guard who is long and athletic. She is a lefty with a high basketball IQ, and she could play any of the guard positions.”

LSU: Jenna Deemer, No. 143, 5-7, PG; Akilah Bethel, No. 144 (West Virginia transfer), 6-0, F; Ann Jones, No. 222 (Memphis Transfer), 6-3, C; Stephanie Amichia, No. 226, 6-3, C.

McCormick on the Tigers: “Jenna is a local recruit who is very athletic. She can attack the basket and hit the three, and I think she will really improve at LSU because she loves the game. Akilah is a strong, athletic wing who can go coast-to-coast, and she can hit the deep three. I think she is going to give them a boost. Ann is a legit 6-3, she can score on the block and she has good footwork. Stephanie is a high-energy post player who does the little things.”

Stanford: Brittany McPhee, No. 47, 6-0, SG; Kaylee Johnson, No. 107, 6-2, PF.

McCormick on the Cardinal: “Brittany is a four-three player who has a very high motor. She rebounds and she gets to the free throw line a lot. Kaylee has an inside-outside game. She has excellent skills and a good all-around game.”

NC State: Carlee Schuhmacher, No. 24 JC, 6-2, C; Chloe Jackson, No. 106, 5-8, SG; Dominique Wilson, No. 134 (Arkansas transfer), 5-6, PG; Akela Maize, No. 553, 6-4, C.

McCormick on the Wolfpack: “Carlee is a good, solid player who will bang in the paint. She can score down low and she has all the fundamentals. Chloe is a versatile guard with a good handle and a strong understanding of the game. Dominique is very quick and she has a scorer’s mentality. She can finish in traffic and she has three-point range. Akela is a long athlete who will give them a presence in the post.”

St. Joseph’s: Avery Marz, No. 252, 5-7, PG; Sarah Veilleux, No. 326, 5-11, SG.

McCormick on the Hawks: “Avery is a smart player with athletic ability, and she is coming off a strong summer. Sarah is a wing with a high basketball IQ. She anticipates well on defense, and she can hit the deep three on the other end.”

Charlotte: Griffin Dempsey, No. 378, 5-7, PG; Mintrell Mckoy, No. 417, 6-3, C; Amaya Ransom, No. 339, 5-10, WF.

McCormick on the 49ers: “Griffin is a combo guard with tremendous NBA shooting range and a high basketball IQ. Mintrell is an athletic post with a strong body. She will give them a true low post presence. Amaya is a very athletic wing who likes to slash to the basket, but she can also hit the three.”
