Houstonians Will Head North To Deep South Classic

Phyllis Dallas-Morris is confident that her veteran players with the Houstonians will be ready to face the nation’s best this spring,  but it’s the young players in the Texas-based club that have Dallas-Morris the most excited.

“I think our top group will be pretty competitive this year,” Dallas-Morris said. “We don’t have a lot of height with that group, but we have an awful lot of quickness. When you start looking at the younger players, that’s where we really have a few players to watch.”

All those players will be showcased at the 2014 Deep South Classic, which will be played in Raleigh, NC, on April 25-27. Now in its 17th year, the Deep South Classic annually hosts many of the nation’s elite travel teams in a field that will eclipse 200 squads, and hundreds of collegiate coaches will be on hand searching for talent. The 2014 event will mark the second year that the Deep South Classic has been held at the Raleigh Convention Center. The venue was a tremendous success in its debut last year, with all games played at one site on 18 courts, and it is in a convenient central location.

The 17-under Houstonians will be led by a pair of veterans players. Kendra Houston is a 5-4 shooting guard from the Class of 2016, and Treazure Mouton is a 5-8 guard who is in the 2017 class. Mouton is rated as the No. 77 recruit in her class by the All Star Girls Report.

“Kendra is a wonderful shooter. She has NBA three-point range,” Dallas-Morris said. “Treazure is a tremendous defensive player. She is lightning quick, and she has very quick hands and long arms. She can guard anyone.”

Bret McCormick, the analyst for the All Star Girls Report, is also high on the Houstonian veterans. “Kendra is a very good shooter with very deep range,” McCormick said. “Treazure is a very quick combo guard. She can really attack the basket, she has a good mid-range game, and she can hit the three.”

While Houston and Mouton will be leading the way, two younger players are in position to get plenty of attention in Raleigh. Monet Jones is a 6-2 wing forward who is in the eighth grade. Alleah Dallas (Phyllis’ daughter) is a 5-10 wing who is in the seventh grade.

“Monet is probably our best player,” Dallas-Morris said. “She is going to be playing up on our 17-under team. She is an amazing ball handler, and she just has so much promise. Monet is a sight to see. Alleah is going to play with the 15-under team. She is a great shooter, and she can take you off the dribble. Alleah also has a amazing wing span, and she knows how to use it.”

“These are two long, athletic wing players who are going to have a lot of coaches watching them,” added McCormick. “Monet has great length and an all-around game. Alleah is good off the bounce, and she can shoot the three.”
