Georgia Jaguars Set To Compete In Marietta TOC

The Georgia Jaguars enjoyed another strong summer on the road, and now they will get to close out the season close to home. The Jaguars will be competing in the All Star Girls Report sponsored Marietta Tournament of Champions. The event, which will be played from Sept. 25-27 at the Suwanee Sports Academy outside of Atlanta, Ga., will feature some of the nation’s finest travel squads.

“Overall, the summer went very well for us,” said Coach Mike Woods. “We had to deal with some injuries on our 17U team, but they still played well enough that we had a lot of college coaches knocking on our door.

“Our 16U team did very, very well, and I think they are ready to be pretty good next year. I’m also excited about the future of our 14U group. They definitely have a lot of talent on that team.”

Among the headliners for the Jaguars this summer were 2017 standouts Alexis Tate (5-10, G), Kayla Bonilla (4-9, PG) and Kayla Vance (6-1, P). The club also had several younger players who stepped up this summer, including Olivia Cochran (2020, 6-3, P). The All Star Girls Report currently has Cochran rated as the No. 33 recruit nationally in her class.

“Alexis is coming off a great summer, and she has a very big future,” Woods said. “She just plays so hard, and the coaches all love that. She is a strong athlete who can rebound, handle the ball, and score in the mid-range game.

“Kayla Bonilla is our spark plug. She has a motor that never stops. She is cat quick, and she defends for 94 feet. Kayla can change the flow of a game with the way she gets after it. She can really do it all, including shooting the basketball. I really hope that coaches will look past her height, because Kayla can get it done.

“Kayla Vance also had a very good summer. I think she grew up a lot this summer, and it showed on the court. She has a big, strong body to go with good skills, and she is getting a lot of looks right now.

“Olivia moved up to our 10th grade team in the middle of the summer, and she did very well. If she keeps working hard, she is going to be very special. Her mother played at Auburn, and her dad was in the NFL, so she has the genes. She has great hands, she runs the floor well, and she can really jump.”
