Central Jersey Hawks Set To Compete In Deep South Classic

Expectations will be high when the Central Jersey Hawks begin their 2017 travel season. The Hawks will head into the spring with a number of key assets — ability, familiarity and confidence.

“We have a very talented group, and they’ve been together  for quite a while,” said Coach Kerry Foderingham. “Most of them play together for the same high school team (St. Rose), and they are having a very, very good season.”

Central Jersey’s first big test will come at the 2017 Deep South Classic, which will be held in Raleigh, NC from April 20-23. The event, which will feature some of the finest travel teams in the nation, will be played at the Raleigh Convention Center. There will be 20 courts in the building, keeping the entire event under one roof in downtown Raleigh.

The Hawks will be led by a trio of 2018 athletes who have already verbally committed to colleges. Mikayla Markum (5-6, PG) is headed to Columbia, Lucy Thomas (6-1, F) has verbally to Monmouth, and Elizabeth Marsicano (6-2, PF) will play at St. Joseph’s. Marsicano is listed as the No. 422 prospect in her class by the All Star Girls Report.

“Mikayla is a point guard who can run the team, and she can score,” Foderingham said. “She can shoot the deep three, and she has a good all-around game. Lucy is another well-rounded player. She could play anywhere from the four to the two spot. She is a capable three-point shooter, she knows how to use her size to score inside, and her best attribute is her ability to slash to the basket and create. Elizabeth is a stretch four type. She can shoot the three and handle the ball outside, but she is also effective in the paint.”

In addition to those versatile veterans, Central Jersey is also expecting big things from Lauren Lithgow (5-8, G, 2019).

“Lauren is very athletic and very explosive,” the coach said. “She is super quick, and she is very, very good in transition. Lauren is a player who can score in a lot of different ways.”
