Capital City Comets Hitting Stride Heading To Nashville

The Capital City Comets had a series of impressive pieces when the travel season began, and as the summer has progressed, those pieces have gradually fallen into place for Coach Joe Fowler.

“We’re very happy with the way this team is developing,” Fowler said. “We got a lot of good looks at the Deep South, and we have been improving ever since. I think we’re going to be hitting our stride in July. That should be a very good month for us. The kids are meshing together, and they are starting to believe in one another, which is always great to see.

“We also have a group that just won’t quit. They are very resilient, and they work hard. This is a good group to work with.”

The Comets will be tested in July at the Nashville Tournament of Champions, which will be played from July 10-12. The event will include 48 elite travel teams, with games being played at the newly expanded Hooptown facility in Smyrna, TN. Hooptown is conveniently located near popular restaurants and hotels.
The Comets are powered by two players from the Class of 2015, as well as a pair of standouts from the Class of 2016. That quartet includes Elishe Torrance (2015, 6-3, C), Bailey Kuhlwein (2016, 5-9, CG), Damonique Patterson (2015, 5-11, W) and Lexy Fisher (2016, 5-6, SG).
“Elishe joined us a week before the Deep South, and her confidence has been rising ever since. She controls the boards, offensively she is good from the free throw line on in, and she is blocking five or six shots per game. Elishe has a big upside,” Fowler said.
“Bailey is a smart player who can slash to the basket or shoot from the perimeter. She is a hard worker, and she has been getting a lot of attention after she played very well at the Deep South. Damonique is a tough, lunch pail type of player who can slash to the basket or hit the jumper from the elbow. She is very strong defensively, and she will guard people for 94 feet. Lexy can shoot it. If you give her a gap, she is going to knock it down, and she makes a great combo in the backcourt with Bailey.”
Bret McCormick, the analyst for the All Star Girls Report, also added his views on the Comets’ stars:
Elishe Torrance: “Torrance is an athletic player who is still developing. She is strong inside and she has a good mid-range jumper.”
Bailey Kuhlwein: “She is an athletic combo guard who can get to the hoop and finish with either hand, and she can hit the three.”
Damonique Patterson: “Patterson is a blue collar athlete. She slashes, plays defense and does all the little things.”
Lexy Fisher: “Fisher is an intelligent two guard with impressive shooting range.”
