Loaded BWSL Richmond Coats Returning To Deep South Classic

The BWSL Richmond program out of Richmond, Va., has gone to great lengths over the years to find quality competition, and the Deep South Classic has become a fixture for the club.

“The thing about the Deep South Classic is that they pack the place with college coaches. They have great organization, even things like the refereeing is good, and the kids get unbelievable exposure.”

The 19th Deep South Classic will be played from April 21-24 in Raleigh, N.C., and it will once again be held at the magnificent Raleigh Convention Center. The entire event will be played under one roof, with action flowing on 20 courts.

Coats is confident that his teams will be ready to excel in Raleigh.

“We will have two 11th grade teams this year, and they will both be very good,” Coats said. “Our ninth and tenth grade teams should also be strong. In fact, those are probably our two best teams.”

The BWSL Richmond roster is highlighted by Sam Brunelle, a 6-3 forward who is rated as the No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2019 by the All Star Girls Report.

“All of the major programs are recruiting Sam,” Coats said. “She has been playing point guard for her high school team, and her ball handling skill are getting better and better. She is one of the hardest workers you will find, and I think she could step into most BCS teams right now.”

Other top flight young prospects in the program include Ajanne Robinson (2019, 5-7, PG), Jada Walker (2021, 5-8, G) and Tracy Hueston (2020, 6-2, F).

“Ajanne is an absolutely incredible athlete,” Coats said. “She is very strong and very athletic, so she is tough to stop. She has a great handle, and she runs the team very, very well.

“Jada is a new player who just moved from Michigan, and she is one of the best guards we’ve had in our program. She is just a very efficient young player who can completely break down a defense. She has NBA three-point range and an amazing ability to get to the basket. She can attack and dish to a teammate or score.

“Tracy is a defensive demon and a great shot blocker. She is very athletic, she runs the floor well, and she can hit from three-point range.”
