Bay Area’s Team Superstar Latest ASGR League Addition

Team Superstar out of the Bay Area in California has a roster that lacks experience …. but there is no shortage of talent. It should be interesting to see just how far those mercurial youngsters can go in 2016 as a part of the ASGR Summer League.

Operating as Team Superstar for the first time this summer after four years as Peninsula Elite, the club will also be competing in the ASGR Summer League for the first time.

“We’re very excited about this opportunity,” said Coach Buck Matthews. “We talked to the ASGR people about joining the league last year, but we weren’t really ready. This year, fortunately, we were able to make it happen.

“We know the league is going to give our girls a chance to compete on a higher platform. This summer is going to be a great experience for them, and they will get great exposure.”

Team Superstar is loaded with young talent, including 2018’s Brianna Claros (5-3, PG) and Tatiana Reese (5-7, CG), as well as 2019’s Ila Lane (6-3, P) and Leilani Augmon (5-10, CG). Lane is currently rated as the No. 59 recruit in her class by the All Star Girls Report, and Augmon is the cousin of former UNLV All-American Stacey Augmon.

“Brianna is the player who makes our engine go,” Matthews said. “She is a complete player. She can control the tempo, she shoots the ball very well, she has vision and awareness, and she is fearless and tough. Tatiana is a player who reminds me of (former Louisville All-American) Shoni Schimmel. She shoots the three extremely well, she is fearless, and she is very strong. She is our most aggressive player, and her IQ and instincts are off the chart.

“Ila is, No. 1, a hard worker. She is still growing into her size right now, but she has a solid, college-ready body. She runs the floor, rebounds and blocks shots. and her offensive game is developing. She is good from 15 feet on in now, and she’s working on it. She just needs some experience.

“Leilani is a smooth athlete with a long stride. She is still young and learning, but I think she has tremendous potential. She can get to the basket and she shoots the three well, so we call her our Baby KD.”
