All-Star Girls Report Basketball founder Michael T. White, a man with a four-decade resume in the sport, is getting back to his roots.
White, who learned the ropes under iconic basketball figures Sonny Vaccaro and Bob Gibbons in the mid-1990s before running world-class girls tournaments and camps, is once again putting his skills as a scout and talent evaluator on full display.
ASGR’s website, a go-to spot for high school, club and college coaches for the last 30 years, has a launched a new look and format on its website. What had been a subscription-based scouting service app for years has turned into a full-service media company focused on ranking the nation’s (and the world’s) top high school girls basketball players.
Most significantly, ASGR’s extensive rankings and evaluations now are available for free for the calender year.
While still organizing camps and tournaments around the nation, White now is taking a more active role in scouting the top college prospects. With a cutting-edge, user-friendly and interactive format on ASGR’s revamped website, White constantly will be updating his rankings of the top 350 girls in each class from 2024 (with Joyce Edwards at Number 1) and future years, archives of No. 1 players from 1995-2023 will added in the coming months).
By clicking on the player’s name, readers will get White’s scouting report on each girl in the rankings with high school, circuit program and future college program when they announce commitment.
“We’re changing course a little bit to remain the go-to source for high school and college coaches,” White said.
White’s ability as a talent evaluator becomes clear with a look at his resume. After working with Vaccaro at the ABCD Camp and Gibbons at All-Star Sports, White solidified grassroots partnerships for product placement for sneaker giants Reebok and FILA. He also served as a consultant for Adidas from 2000-2008 that started the girl’s grassroots division under the direction of Chris Rivers and Jim Gatto. That also was the year White started the Top Ten All-American Camp that went head to head with Nike All-America Camp. White also served as a member of the McDonald’s Girls Players Selection Committee from 2002 through 2019.
The revamped site will provide much more than individual player evaluations. White also will be doing circuit evaluations and share his rankings of the nation’s top high school programs and college recruiting classes.
“We’re changing up the game,” said White, who works out of ASGR’s offices in Tampa, FL and Los Angeles, CA when he’s not on the road at events or scouting. “The numerical ranking system we use was created by Bob Gibbons, who allowed me to use it. We were the first scouting service to project a player’s future ranging from WNBA to high major to mid major and all the way down to Division II. Since then, others have followed a similar format and most of them charge for it. Our rankings are free now for HS, circuit and colleges for the coming year.”
In addition to the new look for rankings and the website, White is relaunching his popular Top Ten All-American Camp.
“The Top Ten Camps were a staple in girls basketball from 2000 to 2010 and were a launching pad for countless WNBA and college stars,” White said. “More than 75 McDonald’s All-Americans took part in our Top Ten All-American Camps and many of them went on to play in the WNBA.”
