The 2015 Deep South Classic champions were finally crowned on April 26 in Raleigh, NC. The event, which was played on 20 courts in the Raleigh Convention Center, once again received rave reviews from coaches and players from across the country.
Champions were determined in a total of 20 divisions, with clubs from nine different states taking home honors. The top levels, however, had a distinct Midwestern flavor.
In the 17U National title game, the Minnesota Fury 2016 Elite 17U squad defeated in-state rival Minnesota Stars Martin 17U. The Fury, which also took home the Deep South title last year, was led by the tandem of Taylor Koenen and Jamie Ruden. Koenen is a North Carolina commitment who is rated as the No. 45 recruit nationally in her class by the All Star Girls Report, while Ruden has committed to Arizona State who is listed at No. 79 by ASGR.
The Minnesota Stars’ run to the finals was paced by Nia Hollie (2016, 5-11, G, No. 37), Kiara Russell (2016, 5-8, G, No. 119) and LaShayla Wright-Ponder (2016, 6-0, F, No. 145).
The 16U National bracket competition came down to Team Ohio 16U’s victory over Barrie Juel Crown 16U out of Ontario, Canada. Team Ohio featured 6-4 Katrina Scheuvront and 5-10 shooting guard Ali Poole. The Canadians had a deep roster that was highlighted by Mikaela Brewer (2016, 5-11, G) and Georgia Lee (2016, 5-9, G).
