1onNone Will Showcase Rising Stars At DSC

The 1onNone program out of Maryland is rapidly developing into a very strong travel club that relies on stability.

“We are a growing program that has success developing players so that they can compete at a higher level,” said Coach John Witherspoon. “I think a big part of our success comes from the kids staying with the program for multiple years. They start with us in the seventh or eighth grade and stay all the way through high school, and that fives us an opportunity to help them grow as players year to year.”

Another element in the 1onNone formula is aggressive scheduling. This year, 1onNone will return to the Deep South Classic, which will be played in Raleigh, NC on April 24-26. The Deep South Classic, which annually features the nation’s top travel programs, will once again have the entire tournament in one facility — the tremendous Raleigh Convention Center.

“We took four teams down to the Deep South Classic last year, and we’re taking five this year,” Witherspoon said. “They have all the things we are looking for in an event. The competition level is very high, the college coaches are at the event, and the venue is great. When we travel, we are looking to play new, tough competition, and we want to get exposure for our kids.”
1onNone has three players from the Class of 2017 who will be getting serious looks from the college coaches this summer. That trio includes Kendal Edwards (5-10, G), Alexis Moore (5-9, F) and Maya Riley(5-8, CG).
“Kendal is the type of player who leads her high school team in scoring, rebounding and assists,” Witherspoon said. “She can handle the ball well with either hand, and she is very good at finishing. Alexis is very good in the post, and she has a nice jump shot. She has right-handed moves in the post and left-handed moves, but she can also face up and score. Maya is a left-handed guard who could play the point or the two guard. She is very, very good at attacking the basket.”
Bret McCormick, the analyst for the All Star Girls Report, offered his breakdown of the 1onNone stars.
“Edwards is an athletic wing type who can really slash to the basket,” McCormick said. “Moore is a strong athlete with a blue collar ethic. She can post up and put it on the floor. Riley is a quick, strong lefty point guard. She is really good in the open floor and she can shoot the three.”
In addition to the three players from the Class of 2017, Witherspoon is also high on rising post prospect Erin Green (2018, 6-3, F).
“Erin an score on either block with either hand, but she is a versatile player,” the coach said. “She has a good 15 foot jump shot, and she spearheads our three-two zone. That tells you a lot about her range and her footwork. She is still growing into her body, and I think this will be a big summer for Erin.”
